This means that you are never renting an independent residence with exclusive use of a shower-bathtub, a toilet, and cooking facilities. You are NOT allowed to have a private room with your own gas or electric equipment to cook or heat food if you also have your own shower and toilet. If you do not comply with the regulations established by Amsterdam’s politicians, you risk a minimum fine of €15,000 plus legal costs, which can increase to €50,000. We are sending you this information because many housing seekers are still unaware of this restrictive policy from the Municipality of Amsterdam and later receive fines from the housing authorities (Municipal Inspectors). The consequences can be severe. If you wish to legally live in one of the apartments, you must first take the time to understand the information being sent to you. The primary tenants are responsible for the selection, viewings, interviews, and request permission for the cohabitation from the owner/landlord. One signed copy goes to the owner. The primary tenants sign the declaration of permission in triplicate for the person to be officially registered as cohabiting in the Population Register. The cohabiting individuals pay their share of housing expenses directly via bank transfer to one of the two primary tenants, with a copy of the payment receipt sent to the owner. The cohabitants enter into a rental agreement with both primary tenants, and all parties sign three copies, one of which is for the owner.
