I am Dutch-Australian, raised on the Gold Coast in Australia with my parents and two sisters in a household where languages, conversation, and curiosity were just part of daily life. Growing up, watching F.R.I.E.N.D.S and Gilmore Girls almost felt like a kind of religious ritual in our house, and Friday nights were often spent having long, slightly too deep conversations about religion, philosophy, or politics (despite none of us really knowing that much about any of these things). It was a home that was warm, talkative, and very full of ideas, but also clean, structured, and responsible. My dad used to vacuum at 7am on Saturdays, which I definitely found irritating as a kid, but it also instilled in me a strong respect for tidy spaces and the idea that household responsibilities are just part of life, even if I personally prefer pushing the vacuuming to a more reasonable Saturday afternoon. I am moving to Leiden in 2026 to begin my Master’s in International Relations at Leiden University, after completing my BA in History and German at the University of Queensland. I speak English natively, German after three years of university study, Dutch at a conversational to semi-fluent level (and I am very motivated to become fully fluent during my time in Leiden), and a little Spanish from a year of study.
